A fixed salary is what others give you and it’s under their full control. When you rely on someone else, you have liberty to take things into your own hands. They can choose to get rid of you, they can choose to stop driving traffic to your area, they can do any number of things that subject you to their mercy. That is way more of a risk than relying on yourself and your commissions.
When you rely on yourself and your income is based on commissions, then the only limit is you. You can work harder and better than anyone else and you will never be at risk to suffer the shortcomings of others.
