Jimi Hendrix Experience Members’ Rights to MAJOR Hits
The Jimi Hendrix Experience had two other members besides the famous left-handed guitarist…
The band’s bassist, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell on the drums.
Both of the British musicians contributed to the TJHE’s three studio albums:
- “Are You Experienced?”
- “Axis: Bold As Love”
- “Electric Ladyland”
The last member of the band passed away in 2008 — Mitchell. Yet Monday, London’s High Court agreed the other Jimi Hendrix Experience members could argue for rights to the music.
Currently, the copyright and recordings are owned by Sony Music Entertainment.
The ruling came after Redding and Mitchell’s estates sought a portion of the proceeds in 2022. The Attorney from the firm representing both estates, Lawrence Abramson made this comment to Reuters:
“NO ONE IS DENYING THAT JIMI HENDRIX WAS ONE OF, IF NOT, THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME. BUT HE DIDN’T MAKE HIS RECORDINGS ALONE AND THEY COULD NOT HAVE ACHIEVED ANY SUCCESS WITHOUT THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF NOEL AND MITCH.”
You might be asking yourself at this point why it took so long for this judgment. Well, to answer that we have to go back about 50 years…
Should Releases Signed in the 70s Be Held Up?
Long before the artist-slash-business-mogul, musicians just played music. As such, they often would sign away their rights to their albums…
MEMBERS OF THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE WERE NO EXCEPTION.
Redding and Mitchell signed releases in the 1970s for one-time payouts for the music.
Noel Redding received $100,000 in 1973. Then, Mitch Mitchell received a $247,500 payment in 1974.
Sony is referring to these documents as evidence to negate the ruling. Nonetheless, Judge Michael Green has decided to hear the entirety of the case in 2025. So, we’ll have to wait to get through the legal “Purple Haze”…
